HTC Butterfly S Review
HTC Butterfly S is the latest addition by HTC in its Android smartphones range. This is the first HTC device to receive the latest Jellybean Android software v4.2.2. HTC Butterfly has been launched as a successor to HTC Butterfly, but has many a same features like HTC One.
Butterfly S has not got major changes in the design from its predecessor. There are little changes only of dimensions. The device is packed up with many outstanding features with camera downgraded to 4 MP only, but is enough powerful to capture high quality images in low light as well.
The battery size draws attention towards it but is not that much powerful to last a day long according to my usage of a smartphone. For moderate use, it is good choice although.
Let me now start review of this smartphone, which is our major concern.
Design and Looks
I will give very average points on the behalf of the build material of this device, as cheap plastic which very easily attracts the fingerprints and smudges over it. A handset at such price range should be very effective in the build quality.
iPhone 5 and HTC One are the two examples for the HTC makers to cope up with the requirements of a user who will pay that huge amount for a product and just disappoints from the cheap plastic used on it.
Similarly, Butterfly S misses out the water proof feature of its ancestor. And this feature is now being used in the similar ranged smartphones very effectively. Where Sony Xperia Z can capture images under water, this handset is unable to do so.
The new butterfly variant has got HTC BoomSound, which means, HTC has provided the speakers grills on the top of the display as well as on its lower part, which is a good move by HTC. So, sound quality has been very loud and rich from HTC One to Butterfly S.
When viewed from the front portion, HTC Butterfly S has the front camera and the sensor on the top with a speaker grill. Below there is a huge display with fullHD resolution. HTC One had two touch sensitive Android buttons under the display. This phone receives the three buttons gain by the HTC. It was also appraisable.
The SIM card tray and the microSD slot have been provided at the top of this handset with a Power key, near these two. The bottom side has the microUSB port with no protective covering, and a microphone. The SIM tray has been provided with a spring shook out function with a protective covering.
From the rear part, this phone has the 4 MP camera on the top, which has boundary little arisen from the rest. The lower portion has the beats audio label, and rest of the body is clear and has a constant color. The phone comes in three different rear flaps. I loved the red one the most.
HTC has given a tagline with this device – ‘Redefining High Definition’. And this tagline is also realistic, due to its great display of 5 inches size having fullHD resolution with whopping 441 ppi pixel density.
The screen has got the protection by Gorilla Glass, and is very crisp. It reproduces colors very crisply and has very good viewing angles.
This display also works and is visible in time of bright sun. Thanks to the full optical lamination. Most of the handsets are not worth capable of giving better view in sunlight.
Memory and Storage
The phone has 16 GB internal memory storage, which can also be upgraded to 32 GB using the microSD card. The HTC Sense also provides the 25 GB Dropbox storage for more storage needs. It will only require you to connect through internet and signup and then login to the Dropbox account.
RAM of this phone is outstanding, which is 2 GB in size, directly equal to Samsung Galaxy S4.
The camera of this phone is not impressive when compared to the 13 MP camera of S4. However, HTCC One’s 8 MP camera is equivalent to the 4 MP camera of this phone.
The camera is said to be 4 MP Ultrapixel camera in official terms with f2.0 aperture. A Back-illuminated BSI sensor is also there to capture low light images very effectively. But the camera tends to fall short during the noise compression.
The phone is capable to capture videos in fullHD resolution at the rate of 30fps. That is interesting. Oreover, it is equipped with a bunch of camera features such as autofocus, simultaneous HD video and image recording, face and smile detection and HDR mode.
The front snapper is 2.1 MP in size and has got HDR feature too.
Operating System and UI
Since, HTC Butterfly S has got Android v4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS, it is the first HTC smartphone to receive it. However, you will miss out the lock screen methods of Jelly bean 4.2.2, because HTC Sense UI v5 offers you many such lock screen methods.
Here is a feature of BlinkFeed, which presents the feeds from WeChat, social networks and news from over 1400 content partners, which provide 10000 feeds everyday. So, this feature is introduced by HTC for the users’ convenience.
Butterfly S has got the same configuration as that of HTC one, but has higher clock. It is a quad core based device, whose cores are integrated with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset (same as that of HTC One).
The frequency of Butterfly S is 1.9 GHz, which makes it swifter than 1.7 GHz processor of HTC One. Playing games and videos on this phone is awesome and with such a hardware it can compete with S4.
3200 mAh battery of this phone has many plus points over the 2600 mAh battery of Galaxy S4. Yet it is not that useful to rely upon as a smartphone is a great battery-consumer and to make it reliable, the technology should be improved further.
HTC Butterfly S price in USA
